Abstract
The application of simulation models in connection with real mechanical engineering has in the recent years established itself in many fields of research and development. Starting with the Hardware-in-the-Loop simulation for the virtual set-up of control systems, up to control func-tions based on simulation models. But so far, only subcomponents of machines and plants have been examined. Even though, especially in the case of big units with many linked machin-ing stations and extensive material handling, like bottle filling units, pill packing systems or units for assembling semiconductors, the initial operation of the distributed and often very inhomoge-neous control technology is very time and cost-intensive and the monitoring during operation very difficult. The occurrence of failures results in immediate loss of production and conse-quently increasing cost.
In the proposed research project a method will be developed that allows a simulated set-up of the entire plant with its real control technology and, in addition, a simulated monitoring of the system during operation, and, on top of it, the optimization of production processes depending on the current incoming orders. A multi-scale simulation method is needed, which provides the possibility for macroscopic modeling of the material flow with high part numbers for the analysis of the flow rate and the plant utilization (logistic scale) and the microscopic modeling of the in-dividual parts for the simulation of functions and failures in the plant (physical scale). In particu-lar, in the microscopic simulation the modeling of physical phenomenas as, for example, part collision and the gripping of parts by manipulators shall be investigated for the applicability in a real-time simulation.
